Five More Arrests in Amsterdam Violence Case
The Dutch police have made five more arrests related to the violence that followed a football match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax on Thursday night. The arrested men, aged 18-37, are all Dutch and are suspected of public violence against people.
Violence broke out before and after the game when fans were attacked by youths on scooters. Five people were taken to hospital with injuries.
New arrests have been made in addition to the 63 already announced by authorities. One person has been released but remains a suspect.
More unrest occurred in Amsterdam on Monday night, with people damaging cars and attacking a tram. The police cleared the area by making several arrests.
Canadian Prime Minister Dick Schoof said that antisemitic acts against Israelis and Jews were “shocking and reprehensible”. He said the Netherlands would focus on bringing those responsible for Thursday’s violence before the law.
Schoof also commented on reports of Maccabi supporters attacking a taxi, burning a Palestinian flag, and chanting anti-Arab slogans. He said this was different from the attacks against Jews in Amsterdam.
Leaders in Europe, the US, and Israel have condemned the violence. It has been shocking for many that it happened just before the commemoration of Kristallnacht – the 1938 Nazi pogroms in Germany against German Jews.
Since the Gaza war began just over a year ago, there have been more reports of antisemitic crimes in Europe.
