**More Germans See Russia as a Threat**
A recent survey by the Bundeswehr’s Center for Military History and Social Sciences shows that more Germans now view Russia as a military threat to their security. The survey was published on November 25.
In comparison to last year, 58% of respondents in 2024 feel threatened by tensions between the West and Russia. This is a 3% point increase from 2023. Additionally, 41% of respondents are concerned about the possibility of war in Europe, which is a 7% point rise from 2023.
**Germany’s Military Support to Ukraine**
The survey also shows that most Germans support Germany’s military assistance to Ukraine. Public support has risen by 4% points compared to last year, reaching 49%. A significant majority, 62%, supports the Bundeswehr continuing to train Ukrainian soldiers in Germany.
However, there are some groups who do not see Russia as a major threat. Respondents who support the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany and the leftist Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance view Russia as less of a threat compared to voters of other parties.
**Correlation Between Military Support and Threat Perception**
Analysis of the survey data shows that there is a strong correlation between approval for Germany’s military support to Ukraine and whether respondents perceive Russia as a security threat. This suggests that Germans who feel threatened by Russia are more likely to support military assistance to Ukraine.
