Nika Melia, chairman of the United National Movement (UNM) and Tbilisi mayoral contender, said on TV Pirveli, that if elected mayor, he would leave his post as chairman of UNM.
“It’s very important that high-ranking government officials in the capital have a firm stance and I must start with myself. That regardless of party positions they will leave high party positions after the victory and switch completely to resolving local issues. Melia says that after the victory it will be impossible for her to continue as the UNM chairman and mayor of Tbilisi.
He said that it is impossible to be the leader of the largest political group and the mayor of a capital at the same time. He called on all the other officials who would be represented in City Hall by other parties to take the same decision.
