Georgian Officials Discuss EU Membership Plans in Romania
A Georgian parliamentary delegation is visiting Bucharest. The group met with Romanian officials to discuss Georgia‘s plans for joining the European Union.
Georgia’s Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, Nikoloz Samkharadze, was part of the delegation. He said that Georgia aims to be ready to join the EU by 2030. This message was also shared with the public in Georgia.
The Georgian side asked the Romanians if they think the EU will be ready for enlargement by 2030. They raised concerns about economic issues, migration, and security in the EU. The Romanian officials agreed that these are valid concerns.
According to Samkharadze, five years is a realistic timeframe for Georgia‘s preparations for EU membership. He said that if the country remains peaceful, they will be able to implement necessary reforms to join the EU.
