Georgian Government‘s Laws Criticized by Nino Dolidze
Nino Dolidze, chairwoman of the “Fair Elections and International Democracy Society,” recently spoke out against the Georgian government’s plans to adopt a law similar to the US “FARA” law. She expressed her concerns on the “PalitraNews” program “Daily Newsroom.”
According to Dolidze, civil society poses a threat to the ruling party “Georgian Dream” because it speaks the truth. The chairwoman stated that the government has been trying to limit freedom in the country for years and sees civil society as a threat.
New Law Targets Freedom of Speech
Dolidze commented on the government’s plans to adopt a law similar to the US “FARA” law, which regulates foreign agents. She emphasized that her organization will not comply with the new law and will continue to serve Georgia. The chairwoman also pointed out that civil society defends citizens’ rights, exposes corruption, and promotes free elections.
Violence Against Protesters Criticized
Dolidze further criticized the government’s handling of protests, stating that different mechanisms are being used to suppress protesters. She noted that the use of “titushki” (paid thugs) and attackers against demonstrators is aimed at intimidation and preventing citizens from participating in protests.
Unfair Treatment by Investigative Agencies
The chairwoman also commented on the double standard within investigative agencies. She observed that those who carry out the government’s political agenda are treated leniently, even when they act violently. In contrast, protesters face harsh treatment, including large fines.
Large Fines for Protesting Unacceptable
Dolidze described the large fines imposed on protesters as “absolutely unacceptable.” She noted that the minimum wage in Georgia is much lower than the fine amount, making it impossible for people to pay. The chairwoman emphasized that the goal of these fines is to break the spirit of protesters.
Recommendation to Appeal Fines
Dolidze recommended that individuals who receive large fines appeal them. She stated that this will delay the process and put administrative pressure on the government.
