**NGOs and Media Fear Retaliation Under New Law**
A new law in the US aims to stop foreign agents from influencing American politics. But some people are worried that it will also silence non-government organizations (NGOs) and journalists.
Nino Lomjaria, a lawyer, says the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) should not apply to NGOs and media outlets. If they do have to register, she warns, it could lead to a “Russian Law 3“.
**What is FARA?**
FARA requires people who work for foreign governments or their agents to tell the US government about their activities.
**Why are NGOs and media worried?**
Lomjaria fears that if NGOs and media outlets have to register under FARA, people will be too afraid to speak out against a particular country. This is because they could face criminal charges if they are found to be working for a foreign agent.
