Nino Lomjaria of “European Orbit of Georgia” told journalists that the Constitutional Court’s decision not to suspend the Russian law was without legal justification. It also did not take into consideration the legal conclusions of both local and international experts. This is a betrayal of Constitution by the judges.
She said that it was a shame that the court couldn’t make an independent ruling.
“The court had an historic opportunity to oppose a suspension of the European Integration Process, to prevent uncontrolled government access to citizens’ private information, and to stand up for its own people who, despite government violence over months, defied Russian Law steadfastly. The Constitutional Court failed to make an independent ruling, and again was influenced by the ruling party. It also failed to fulfill its function – protecting the Constitution.
Georgian media and nongovernmental organizations have thanked the two judges for their disapproval and continue to fight authoritarianism in Georgia. We will continue to fight the Russian law in the country as well as international institutions. With the support of the Georgians, we will achieve its final, unconditional cancellation,” said Nino.
Information: The Constitutional Court of Georgia has not complied with the request for suspension of the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence“. The court also recognized that the lawsuits submitted were partially admissible. This means that substantive discussions will start.
