US Ambassador Nominee Wants to Give Trump Maximum Flexibility to End Ukraine War
Elise Stefanik, a Republican congress member and Donald Trump’s nominee for United Nations ambassador, said she wants to give Trump “maximum flexibility” to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. This was stated on January 21.
Stefanik has a mixed record when it comes to supporting Ukraine. She has been nominated for the UN ambassador role by Trump since his election win. When asked how she would hold Russia accountable for its war crimes in Ukraine, Stefanik said her main goal is to support Trump’s efforts to negotiate a peace agreement.
At her Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Stefanik said: “I support President Trump’s commitment to bringing this war to a resolution to stop the killing.” She defended her record in Congress and mentioned that she voted for supplying lethal military aid to Ukraine during Trump’s first term.
Stefanik did not mention any specific sanctions or measures against Russia. When asked about penalizing Russia for human rights abuses, she again emphasized the importance of supporting Trump’s agenda.
Trump has promised to negotiate a swift end to the war in Ukraine. His special envoy, Keith Kellogg, said they aim to reach a ceasefire within 100 days of taking office. This is a change from Trump’s previous promise to end the war within 24 hours.
Both Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are planning meetings with Trump.
