South Korean intelligence suggests that North Korea‘s support for Russia could be based on the expectation that a Trump victory in the US election would end Ukraine assistance.
According to South Korean military and intelligence officials, North Korea has sent thousands of soldiers to Russia in support of its ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Thousands more are expected to join by the end the year.
According to The Korea Herald, the Institute for National Security Strategy(INSS), a think-tank affiliated with South Korea’s National Intelligence Service(NIS), stated in a recent report that North Korea appears to have made the decision to send troops into Russia based on a calculation that Donald Trump‘s victory in the upcoming US Presidential election would lead to a rapid end to the Ukraine War.
South Korea provided non-lethal assistance to Ukraine in the past, including mine clearing equipment, but refused Kyiv’s request for weapons. Since February 2022, Russia has strengthened military ties with North Korea, securing more than 2,000,000 artillery rounds and ballistic missiles. Both countries signed a mutual defence pact in the month of June. South Korea reported that 3,000 North Korean soldiers were training in Russia. This number is expected to increase to 10,000 by the end of December. Ukraine confirmed that initial units have arrived at the Kursk combat area.
