New Military Equipment in Russia and Ukraine
The Russian military has received its first batch of 122mm M-2023 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS). These systems are designed to fire powerful rockets over long distances. This is good news for Russia, as it helps to make up for a shortage of MLRS systems.
Russia also recently tested its own M1985/M1991 MLRS systems, which can fire 240mm rockets. These larger-caliber systems will help offset the lack of other types of rocket artillery.
A new development in Ukraine is the use of North Korean-made artillery systems. Reports say that 170mm M1989 Koksan self-propelled guns are being used by Russian forces in the Lyman area. This is a surprise, as it’s not common for North Korean military equipment to be seen in combat.
The appearance of the M-2023 MLRS in Russia suggests a shortage of BM-21 “Grad” systems and an inability to produce or restore these types of rocket artillery at home.
It’s worth noting that some North Korean military equipment is designed to look like civilian vehicles. The M-2023 MLRS, for example, looks like a cargo van.
Ukraine has become the first country to face North Korean-made military equipment in combat and also test its capabilities. This is a new challenge for Ukraine and other countries in the region.
