Norway’s EUR500m military aid package to Ukraine announced last week includes F-16 jet fighters and NASAMS air defence systems. Hennadiy Kvalenko, Director of the International Defense Cooperation Department of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense revealed the details at the Kyiv security forum, according to RBC Ukraine.
The Nordic countries are amongst the strongest supporters of Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. These nations provide military aid, training and humanitarian assistance, while also strongly advocating Ukraine’s sovereignty in international forums.
Bjorn Arild Graem, the Norwegian Minister of Defense, recently visited Odesa to meet with Ukrainian military officials, including Rustem Umerov, his counterpart. During the visit Ukrainian officials showed Gram a rehabilitation center and border fortifications, while also briefing Gram on the current security situation.
Kovalenko stressed that the new package of aid includes F-16 fighter jets as well as NASAMS systems. Umerov thanked Norway for the military aid, and confirmed that six F-16s would be transferred by the end the year.
Norway will also spend $118,8 million on weapon systems and spare parts specifically for Ukrainian F-16s. Norway has also indicated its willingness to invest in Ukraine’s defense industry.
Norway has joined an aviation coalition that supports Ukraine. It has already started transferring F-16 fighter planes to the country, as part of its ongoing military assistance.
