Ukraine Captures North Korean Soldiers in Kursk Region
Two North Korean soldiers have been captured by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region. The soldiers were wounded but survived and are now being questioned by investigators from Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).
This was a difficult task, as Russian and North Korean forces often kill their own wounded comrades to cover up any evidence of North Korea‘s involvement in the war against Ukraine.
The Ukrainian military team that captured the soldiers is being praised for its success. The two prisoners are receiving medical care, as is standard procedure for all prisoners of war.
The SBU has been instructed to let journalists interview the prisoners. This is an important step, as it will allow the world to learn more about what is happening in Ukraine.
What Do the Prisoners Say?
The North Korean soldiers claim they were sent to Ukraine for “training,” not to fight against the country. They are speaking only Korean, so translators from South Korea’s National Intelligence Service are helping with the communication.
One prisoner says he was born in 2005 and has been serving in the North Korean military since 2021. He had a Russian document on him that shows he underwent training with Russian forces in 2024.
The other prisoner is older, born in 1999, and claims to have been a sniper-reconnaissance specialist in the North Korean army since 2016. He does not have any identification documents on him.
Their capture occurred on January 9, 2025, after separate attempts by Ukrainian soldiers and paratroopers from Tactical Group No. 84 of the Special Operations Forces.
