**Ukrainian Educator Killed in Russian Missile Strike**
A 72-year-old Ukrainian man was killed when a Russian missile hit his home in Chernihiv. Oleksii Halionka, an educator and philologist, died on January 3, 2025.
The attack involved three ballistic missiles that struck residential areas. It killed Halionka and injured four others. Several homes were damaged in the blast.
Halionka had already lost his family home and a library of over 4,000 books two years ago when Russian forces destroyed them. He had been living in a small building on the same property since then.
Halionka’s niece said he was planning to build a new house this year. She remembered him as “a very kind and sensitive person.” Halionka was well-known for his work as an educator and author of over 100 publications.
The missiles targeted civilian infrastructure, leaving parts of the neighborhood heavily damaged. Chernihiv Oblast has been under attack since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Despite Russian forces withdrawing from the region, it remains vulnerable due to its proximity to the border.
