Public Defender Speaks Out Against Police Action
The Public Defender has called on the Ministry of Internal Affairs to stop breaking up a protest, detaining participants, and using force. This is according to a statement from the Ombudsman.
Levan Ioseliani, the Public Defender, said that there was no reason for police to disperse the peaceful demonstration. He noted that at 00:34, when police began to break up the protest, it was calm and there was no legal basis for interfering with people’s right to assemble.
The statement from the Public Defender reads:
“The Public Defender refers to the ongoing demonstration on Rustaveli Avenue… The Public Defender calls on the Ministry of Internal Affairs to stop dispersing the gathering, detaining participants and using special means, and to allow the protest participants to continue their demonstration.”
