Parliament to Discuss TV and Radio Law Changes
On March 3, the Georgian Parliament will discuss changes to the laws governing television and radio broadcasters. These changes are proposed by the parties “Georgian Dream” and “People’s Power”.
One of these proposals aims to prevent TV and radio stations from getting funding from foreign sources. This means that media organizations cannot accept money or benefits from abroad.
Another proposal suggests that the Communications Regulatory Commission can warn and fine TV and radio stations if they do not follow rules like fairness and impartiality in their news coverage. The commission can also fine them for recording interviews without warning, or choosing only one side of an issue to discuss.
Under current law, if a broadcaster breaks these rules, it will be warned and given time to fix the problem. If it doesn’t, it will face fines. The goal is to make sure TV and radio stations are honest and fair in their reporting.
These proposals will be discussed at a committee meeting on March 3.
