Parliament Approves “Treason” Clause
The Georgian Parliament has passed a new law on its third reading. The law proposes to add a new article, called 307¹, to the Criminal Code.
This new article will make it clear what is considered treason in Georgia. Treason includes actions that break the country’s laws and threaten national security. These can be things like:
* Trying to change the country’s borders
* Making deals with other countries that go against Georgian law
* Helping foreign powers to hurt Georgia
* Spying on the government or helping spies
It’s worth noting that all these actions are already punishable under other parts of the Criminal Code.
The people who proposed this new law come from two main groups: “Georgian Dream” and “People’s Power“. They wanted to make it clear what treason means in Georgia.
