German Politics: Chancellor Candidate Talks Peacekeeping in Ukraine
The main candidate for chancellor of the CDU/CSU alliance, Friedrich Merz, spoke about sending German troops to Ukraine. This came after comments from Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
Merz said that a war continues in Ukraine and Russia is being cruel to civilians. He wants to end the war but thinks nobody is asking about deploying peacekeepers.
This is different from what Chancellor Olaf Scholz said earlier. Scholz, who is leading the Social Democratic Party, ruled out sending German troops to Ukraine now. He said there was an agreement with Baerbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on this matter.
Pistorius added that there are still too many unknowns about what would happen after a ceasefire in Ukraine. However, he did not rule out the possibility of deploying peacekeepers if it was needed to keep the peace.
