Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, said at a news conference held in Strasbourg on October 8 that Donald Trump will not wait until he is inaugurated as president in January to “manage peace” in Ukraine.
Orban was not shy when he spoke to reporters about his preferred candidate for the elections.
“We will open a few bottles of champagne, if Trump returns,” he said.
Orban, who has been a close ally to Trump for many years, is also widely considered as a key ally for Russia in the EU.
Orban has blocked aid to Ukraine repeatedly, pushed for negotiation, and often spouted Kremlin talk points. Hungary has condemned the war, but refused to provide Ukraine with weapons.
In July, he went on a “peace-tour” and met with Russian president Putin, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Trump.
Trump has also repeatedly claimed that he can end Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine within 24 hours.
During the debate on the presidential election of Sept. 10, the ex-president reiterated his earlier statements that he was most concerned about ending the war, but he once again refused to provide any concrete details despite being asked by Volodymyr Zelensky to do so.
Orban said: “He won’t wait until the inauguration to manage peace.”
“(He will) act immediately. We as European leaders have no time to waste because we won’t have two or three months between the election and inauguration of the president.
“We must act as quickly as possible, first by reacting intellectually, philosophically, then strategically and finally at the action level.”
Orban, who has been in power since 2010, stated earlier this year that God had plans for Trump to advance peace. He was referring to Trump’s surviving an assassination in July.
Orban arrived at Strasbourg on Tuesday and is scheduled to speak before the European Parliament plenary on October 9.
This includes 1,150 casualties that Russian forces have suffered in the last day.
