**Russian Actor Nominated for Oscar, Despite Ties to Russian Propaganda**
Yura Borisov, a Russian actor known for his roles in propaganda films and unauthorized visits to occupied Crimea, has been nominated for an Academy Award. The nomination was announced on January 23 by the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
**Borisov’s Past**
Borisov is being recognized for his supporting role in the film “Anora,” which tells the story of a young sex worker who marries into a Russian oligarch’s family. This is Borisov’s first Oscar nomination, making him the first Russian actor to receive this recognition in nearly five decades.
**Russia’s War Efforts**
Borisov’s past involvement with propaganda films and unauthorized visits to occupied Crimea have raised concerns about his ties to Russia’s aggressive actions. Moscow has been waging a brutal war against Ukraine, which has already killed tens of thousands of people, including at least 12,300 civilians.
**Other Oscar Nominations**
The film “Anora” itself has also been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (Sean Baker), and Best Actress at the 97th Academy Awards. The Oscars ceremony will be held on March 2 this year.
