Russian Drones Attacked Ukraine, But Air Defense Saved the Day
On December 16, Russia launched a nighttime attack on Ukraine using drones. Ukrainian air defense forces were ready and shot down many of them.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces used Shahed drones and other types of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the attack. They launched the drones from the Bryansk and Oryol oblasts in Russia at around 1:00 am.
The Ukrainian air defense forces had a multi-layered response to the attack. They used anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare divisions, and mobile fire groups to shoot down the drones. By 8:30 am, they confirmed that they had shot down 27 of the 49 Russian UAVs.
Some drones were still in the air or did not reach their targets. However, the Ukrainian forces prevented about 19 additional drones from causing harm.
Russia Continues Its Attacks on Ukraine
This attack is just one part of Russia’s ongoing effort to disrupt civilian life in Ukraine. Since October 2022, Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with missile and drone assaults. The goal is to make it difficult for people to live during the winter months.
Over the past day, the Kharkiv Oblast experienced multiple strikes. A sports complex was damaged in one attack, injuring a woman. A private house was also hit, causing injuries to another woman.
The Kherson Oblast saw extensive bombardment as Russian forces targeted residential areas and critical infrastructure. An intercity bus was damaged, leaving two people wounded.
In the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a kamikaze drone struck a community, while artillery shelling hit other communities.
