Tension in Occupied Abkhazia
A conflict expert has spoken out about the situation in occupied Abkhazia. Paata Zaqareishvili said that Russia is annexing Abkhazia economically, not physically.
The last year has seen constant tension in the region. This includes issues like the Bichvinti dispute, which is still unresolved. The Abkhazian society and politicians rejected a proposal to build apartments for Russian citizens. However, Russia wants to take control of the territory.
Shalva Papuashvili said there are no signs of annexation, but he has no idea what’s happening in Abkhazia. According to Russian law, decisions made by Russian courts apply directly to Abkhazia. The de facto economy minister recently signed an investment agreement, which was scheduled for ratification today.
The situation became tense when two former MPs were arrested using brutal methods. This led to a demonstration where people blocked the city of Sokhumi. Negotiations are currently underway with Aslan Bzhania, who may even resign. The only subject of negotiation is his resignation and who will take his place temporarily.
Zaqareishvili does not expect “Georgian Dream” to respond to the current events in occupied Abkhazia. He believes that the government’s silence is a sign that Georgia has given Abkhazia to Russia at the price of maintaining its power.
