EU Ambassador Speaks Out on Georgia-EU Relations
The EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, has made a statement about the current state of relations between Georgia and the European Union. He said that things are at their lowest point.
According to the ambassador, there are several reasons for this situation. High-level visits between Georgian and EU officials have stopped. The EU has also suspended financial aid to the government. This means that money that was supposed to be used for important projects will not be given. Additionally, the EU has put restrictions on visas for some people with diplomatic passports.
The ambassador said that his job is to tell the public about these developments. He wishes things were different, but he thinks they are very difficult now.
In December 2023, the EU decided to open its doors to Georgia if it implemented certain reforms. However, most of these reforms have not been done. Instead, steps have been taken that move Georgia further away from the EU. The ambassador finds this situation unfortunate, but it is a reflection of the current state of relations between Georgia and the EU.
