The European Union supports independent and free media in Georgia, and in any other country. A free and independent media is essential for a democracy. Pawel Herczynski said that it is up to the media whether it wants to share a statement or not, and which statement it will and won’t share. He was responding to a question about whether he thought that his statement on the election banners for “Georgian Dream“, was interference in the elections, because three television stations refused the air the banners.
“The European Union supports independent and free media in Georgia, and in any other country.” A democratic system is impossible without free and independent media. It is up the media to decide on what they want and don’t want to share, and what statements they will and won’t. “I was asked to express my opinion by the media and I did so, and it’s up to the independent and free media to decide what rules they will follow,” said the diplomatic.
The ambassador was asked a question about the statement made by Kakha Kaladze who criticized his comment on the banners for “Georgian Dream”. She said that in “all developed countries, anyone who did this would be thrown out of the country instantly”.
“I don’t respond to other people’s statements, this isn’t my role as an Ambassador of the European Union.” As an EU ambassador, my role is to represent the EU position. Right now, and especially in light of the ongoing campaign for elections, I am sorry but I cannot comment on this statement or any other statement. What I can tell you is that, according to diplomatic practice any country has the right to ask a diplomat from another country to leave their country. In recent months and years, we’ve seen this happen in several other cases.
