Pawel Herczynski – the EU Ambassador in Georgia – has criticized recent actions and rhetoric by high-ranking Georgian official, accusing them to be undermining the relations with the , and hindering Georgia’s EU accession.
Herczynski expressed his concern over what he called a competition between officials, and the , to insult and question Union. He said that this behavior was “unambiguously unacceptable,” especially from a country that aspires to join the EU.
The ambassador’s remarks came in response a question about the normalization between Georgia, the European Union and NATO, in the context the in Ukraine. He stressed that the problem is in Georgia, not in Kiev, Brussels or .
“In of this past year, the – the leaders of 27 member states of European Union – decided to stop Georgia’s process of accession to European Union. This is a very painful and regrettable situation, especially since other countries’ accession processes have been accelerated. “The suspension of Georgia’s entry was the result of decisions taken here in Georgia,” Herczynski said.
The ambassador emphasized that in its enlargement report, the EU demanded a year earlier an end to anti and anti EU propaganda and conspiracy theories. The anti-Western narrative has not diminished over the last year. Instead, it appears to have intensified with prominent Georgians continually undermining EU relationships.
“I get a sense that, in the past few months, there has been a competition between high-ranking officials of the Georgian government and ruling parties to see who can insult and undermine the EU the most. Herczynski said that this was unacceptable for a country seeking to join the European Union.
