Georgia Faces Political Crisis
The European Union’s Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski, spoke with journalists about the country’s current situation. For over two months, people have been protesting in the streets, demanding democracy and a closer relationship with Europe.
Ambassador Herczynski said that the EU wants Georgia to succeed. He explained that by granting Georgia candidate status, they were hoping for the country to move forward towards full membership of the European Union. However, since December 23, things have gotten worse in Georgia. The Ambassador described the situation as “from bad to worse”.
He emphasized that it’s up to the people of Georgia to find a way out of this crisis. He suggested that dialogue between the authorities and the protesters is necessary. The Ambassador recommended that the authorities start listening to the people who are standing on the streets, demanding change.
