**US Says Ukraine Can’t Get Back 2014 Borders**
The US Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, said on February 12 that it’s not possible for Ukraine to get back its borders from 2014. This is in any talks with Russia to end the war.
**What Happened in 2014?**
Russia invaded Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region and took over Crimea in 2014. This happened after a revolution in Ukraine that got rid of a president who was close to Russia.
**US Wants Ukraine to Be Strong**
Hegseth said that the US wants Ukraine to be strong and prosperous. However, he also said it’s not realistic to think that Ukraine can go back to its borders from 2014. He thinks this would only make the war last longer and cause more suffering.
**No US Troops in Ukraine**
The US Defense Secretary also said that there will be no US troops sent to Ukraine as part of any security guarantee. Any security guarantees given to Ukraine must come with support from European and non-European forces.
**Changes in US Foreign Policy**
Hegseth was speaking at a meeting in Brussels, where the UK has taken over the US’s role in chairing a group that helps Ukraine defend itself against Russia. The US is revising its foreign policy after President Donald Trump returned to office.
