South Korea and Ukraine warned of North Korea’s deployment in Russia, but US officials have not confirmed it publicly yet.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed US evidence that North Korean military forces are in Russia, but their exact role is still unclear.
Austin’s announcement is the first official confirmation by senior Biden administration officials that North Korea has deployed up to 12,000. Ukraine and South Korea had long claimed that North Korea had sent up to 12,000 troops in support of Russia’s war efforts. The deployment is especially significant, given that North Korea has one of the largest standing armies in the world with more than 1 million active personnel.

He stressed that North Korean military involvement would have serious consequences for Europe and the Indo-Pacific.
