**Anti-Western Party Leaves Ruling Coalition**
Guram Macharashvili, the leader of People’s Power, a party critical of the West, has announced that his party will leave the ruling parliamentary majority. He claims there is no “healthy opposition” in the country.
People’s Power was created in 2022 as an anti-Western platform. It folded back into its parent party, GD, during the election campaign. Now, with GD sitting alone in parliament, Macharashvili argues that the country needs a true opposition to perform its duties.
He says the rest of the opposition is “radical” and financed by foreign forces, lacking independence. Paradoxically, he claims to have no fundamental disagreement with GD.
Macharashvili’s party has been known for its criticism of the West and its efforts to restrict the rights of foreign-funded civil society organizations. It initiated a bill called the “Foreign Agents” bill in 2023, which was reintroduced by the ruling party last April.
