Protesters Take to the Streets in Tbilisi
Large crowds gathered in Tbilisi on March 31. This was the 124th day of non-stop protests by Georgians. The protesters were marking an important day – the arrival of what they call “People’s Spring”. This phrase is from a popular chant against powerful people.
The protest took place near Rustaveli Avenue, which has been at the center of these protests. Many groups joined in and marched through the streets. They also celebrated the 34th anniversary of when Georgia gained its independence back in 1991.
Salome Zurabishvili spoke to the crowd. She announced that a platform for resistance would be created for all pro-European political groups. The atmosphere at the rally was lively, with chants and fireworks. One group sang an anti-oligarchy chant with many others joining in.
The protest came as people were getting angrier about a special investigation into the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia. This commission is part of the one-party parliament called Georgian Dream. The protesters honored fallen soldiers by bringing their portraits to Rustaveli Avenue.
