Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesperson, accused the West of trying influence the course of Georgian elections while asserting that Russia will not interfere with Georgian internal affairs.
“As to the elections, that is not our concern.” We see Western countries making blatant efforts to exert pressure on the current Georgian government and to exert direct and undisguised influences on the course of election campaign,” Peskov added. “We do and will not interfere with Georgia’s internal matters in any way.”
The report from the Russian state-controlled TASS media does not mention if Peskov cited a specific example of an attempt by the West to interfere with Georgia’s election.
He also praised the current relationship between Georgia and Russia. Despite the “complications” that exist in these relationships, he said, the development of people-to-people and humanitarian ties was not hindered.
Peskov’s statements are in line with those of Georgia’s ruling parties, who have repeatedly blamed the West, and Western leaders including the U.S., the EU and other Western countries, for trying to influence Georgia’s election campaign and for acting as what they perceive as a “lifeline”, for the opposition’s agenda. GD leaders don’t mention Russia when they complain about foreign interference. Instead, they point directly to the West.
