Georgia Moving Away from EU, Says German Ambassador
Georgia‘s relations with the European Union are getting worse. This is according to German Ambassador Peter Fischer.
The ambassador said Germany has punished some Georgian citizens for human rights abuses against protesters. He couldn’t say who they were, because of Germany’s laws on protecting personal data.
Peter Fischer also talked about Georgia’s efforts to join the EU. In December 2023, the EU gave Georgia “candidate status”. This means Georgia is one step closer to becoming a member. But since June last year, things have stalled. The ambassador said this is because Georgia is moving away from the EU.
The German ambassador blamed the Georgian government for the delay in EU membership talks.
