Poland Signs $2 Billion Air Defense Deal with US
Poland has signed a $2 billion contract with the United States for a “multi-layered air defense” program. This deal was announced by the Polish Defense Ministry on March 31.
The contract is part of Poland’s efforts to strengthen its national defenses since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. The country has been scrambling fighter jets and activating air defense units amid Russian attacks near its border.
The US-Poland deal includes the delivery of air defense equipment and logistical support for Patriot systems, which will help boost Poland’s air defense capabilities. Polish leaders believe this cooperation with the US is essential to strengthen their security and alliance.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the signing of the agreement confirms the long-standing and intensive cooperation between Poland and the USA in the area of security. Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz added that building up European forces is complementary to strong partnerships with the US.
Russia has been testing Poland’s air defense capabilities by violating its airspace with drones and missiles, possibly targeting Ukraine as well. Poland shares borders with Belarus and Russia’s heavily militarized Kaliningrad exclave, making it a likely target in a potential confrontation between NATO and Russia.
