**Ukraine Police Detain Suspect in Politician‘s Murder**
The National Police of Ukraine have arrested a 54-year-old man suspected of killing Oleksandr Plakhotnik, the former deputy mayor of Kamianske.
Plakhotnik’s body was found with a gunshot wound on March 28 near Kamianske, a city in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Multiple Ukrainian media outlets reported that the victim was confirmed to be Plakhotnik, a member of Yulia Tymoshenko’s Batkivshchyna party.
The suspect was caught in Lviv Oblast, where he had burned his car and fled after the crime. He followed Plakhotnik for several months, collecting information about him and even installing video cameras near the former official’s house. On March 28, the suspect shot Plakhotnik at least 10 times with a firearm, killing him instantly.
Prosecutors said that the motive for the murder was to avoid paying back a debt owed by the victim. The suspect was charged on April 1 with premeditated murder and illegal handling of weapons.
Plakhotnik had run for parliament twice in 2014 and 2019 but failed to get elected. He served as a city councilor from 2015 to 2020.
