Poland’s Foreign Minister Speaks Out on Ukraine Negotiations
Poland’s foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski, says that Ukraine should not be forced into peace talks with Russia. Instead, he believes the aggressor (Russia) should be pressured to negotiate.
Sikorski made his comments on December 16th. He said that the division of tasks between the US and EU should ensure that Ukraine has a stronger negotiating position for future talks. This means putting pressure on Russia, not Ukraine.
With Donald Trump’s return to office in the US, there are concerns about how he will approach peace talks with Russia. Some reports suggest that Trump might consider a peace deal that compromises Ukraine’s territorial integrity. This is causing worries among allies who support Ukraine.
Sikorski emphasized that Poland will intensify sanctions against Russia during its presidency of the EU Council. These new restrictions will include measures against Russia’s shadow fleet, which causes environmental pollution.
The Polish foreign minister is meeting with several leaders on December 18th to discuss topics such as deploying peacekeeping forces in Ukraine and strengthening European support for Kyiv.
Poland’s Defense Minister also recently announced plans to establish an unmanned army by early 2025. This will include aerial, ground, surface, and underwater vehicles focused on drone operations.
