**US Defense Secretary Criticized Over Ukraine Comments**
The US Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has faced criticism from a senior Republican senator over his comments on Ukraine. Senator Roger Wicker said that Hegseth made a “rookie mistake” in suggesting that Ukraine’s return to its pre-war borders was unrealistic.
Hegseth had also stated that NATO membership for Ukraine was off the table and that reclaiming its internationally recognized borders was not feasible. These comments were met with backlash, particularly from Wicker, who is a strong supporter of Ukraine.
**Wicker Speaks Out**
In an interview with Politico, Wicker said that Hegseth’s initial remarks were puzzling and disturbing. He also speculated that the speech may have been written by someone like Tucker Carlson, who he described as a “fool”.
Wicker noted that everyone knows not to make statements before meetings about what they will agree or disagree to. He expressed his surprise at Hegseth’s comments but was heartened by his partial reversal.
**Broader Diplomatic Moves**
The criticism of Hegseth is tied to broader diplomatic moves by the Trump administration. President Donald Trump has held a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war, while Vice President JD Vance is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Munich.
Trump later reinforced Hegseth’s message, stating that Ukraine’s NATO membership was not practical and that a return to pre-2014 borders was unlikely. This has raised concerns among European allies that Ukraine could be sidelined in any potential peace agreement.
**Wicker Stands Firm**
In contrast, Wicker maintained a hardline stance, calling Putin a “war criminal” who needs to be held accountable. He also pushed back against Trump’s suggestion that NATO enlargement provoked Russia’s invasion, stating unequivocally that Russia alone was responsible for the war.
“There are good guys and bad guys in this war, and the Russians are the bad guys,” Wicker said. “They invaded, contrary to almost every international law, and they should be defeated. And Ukraine is entitled to the promises that the world made to it.”
