Trump Chooses New Advisor for National Security
Donald Trump has chosen Rep. Mike Waltz to be his national security advisor. This is important because Waltz is a former Special Forces officer who will help guide US policy in big conflict situations.
Waltz is known for being straightforward and agreeing with President-elect Trump’s ideas. He will oversee changes in how the US handles key international challenges, such as the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East.
Waltz thinks that European countries should do more to help keep Ukraine stable. He believes a peace plan can bring Ukraine closer to Western allies while isolating Russia’s leader, Vladimir Putin. This view is shared by many Republicans, but not by most Democrats or some Senate Republicans who want to continue or increase aid to Ukraine.
Waltz’s ideas match President-elect Trump’s promise to end the Ukraine-Russia conflict on his first day in office. Waltz wants Europe to take more responsibility and for a negotiated solution, which is different from previous US administrations’ approaches.
Waltz will also help the US respond to changing global situations, including conflicts with Israel and Iran.
This selection comes as Trump builds his foreign policy team around his priorities. The New York Times reported that sources close to Trump expect him to choose Florida Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Rubio has recently agreed with Trump that the Ukraine conflict is at a standstill and needs to be ended.
