As winter approaches, Ukraine‘s nuclear power plants that provide 60% of its electricity are at risk.
Politico reports that Ukraine could experience severe power outages in the winter months after Russian attacks have destroyed half of its electricity generation capacity.
Energy experts warn that a combination between cold weather and strikes against nuclear infrastructure could cause Ukrainians to be without electricity up to 20 hours per day.
Since October 2022 the Russian Armed Forces has struck more than 1,000 time at Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Moscow launched more than 200 missiles and drones against power facilities in late August, destroying eight plants and over 800 heat supply installations.
Viktoriya Gryb, the head of the subcommittee on energy security in parliament, said that “the situation is critical.”
An anonymous senior US official warned that “people will be killed in their homes as Russia is destroying the energy infrastructure.”
According to Gennadii R. Riabtsev, the National Institute for Strategic Studies of Ukraine, recent Russian attacks have destroyed more than 9 gigawatts in electrical generation capacity.
Ukraine relies heavily on its nuclear power now, with 60% of the total output coming from this source.
