Ukrainian Opinion Shifting on Territorial Compromise
A recent poll shows a slight change in Ukrainian public opinion. Fewer people now strongly oppose giving up territory, but most still do not want to make concessions.
The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) released the survey on January 3. It found that 51% of Ukrainians are against making any territorial concessions. This is down from 58% in October.
More people are now open to making some compromises. In December, 38% said they would consider giving up territory in certain situations. In October, this number was just 32%.
Most regions in Ukraine show similar trends. However, the East (Donetsk and Kharkiv oblasts) is an exception. Here, only 43% of residents strongly oppose concessions, while 41% are open to some compromises.
The poll also shows that how people feel about the future affects their views on territorial concessions. Those who are optimistic are more likely to oppose giving up territory. On the other hand, those who are pessimistic are more willing to make concessions.
