On Saturday, October 5, 2024, spectators eagerly watched as hot air balloons took off during the mass ascension at the 52nd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The event, which draws hundreds of thousands of people each year, is known for its colorful and unique hot air balloons.
However, on Monday, the fiesta was briefly interrupted when a hot air balloon accidentally hit a power line in northeast Albuquerque. The incident occurred at 8:35 a.m. and left nearly 13,000 customers of the state’s largest electricity provider, Public Service Company of New Mexico, without power for almost an hour.
Thankfully, the pilot of the balloon was able to safely land and was not injured. His name was not released and the cause of the incident is still unknown.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a highly anticipated event, with people from all over the world coming to see the spectacular display of over 100 balloons in various shapes and colors. Despite the brief interruption, the fiesta continued as planned and spectators were able to enjoy the rest of the event.
