President Salome Zurabishvili expressed her concern about the loss of time due to endless controversy and polarization in the country. She emphasized the need for unity and coordination in order to move forward towards our common goal. The President also highlighted the significance of the 100th anniversary of the first Constitution of Georgia, which was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of the independent Democratic Republic of Georgia. Despite the fact that this Constitution only lasted for four days due to the Soviet occupation, it became a symbol of an independent and democratic Georgia. The 1921 Constitution reflected progressive and democratic provisions such as parliamentarism, balanced system of government, universal suffrage, abolition of death penalty, and equal rights for all citizens regardless of gender, nationality or status. These values have been preserved in our historical memory and could not be taken away even by the Soviet occupation. The President also stressed the importance of national unity and the Constitution as the backbone of our modern State and the foundation of our future. She warned that any violation of our legal basis is a violation of the State itself. The overthrow of Zviad Gamsakhurdia’s legitimate government was a direct attack on our State.
