President of Georgia Addresses Citizens
The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, spoke to the nation in a televised address. She said she will meet with leaders of political parties and civil society groups again tomorrow.
The purpose of these meetings is to find a way to manage the protests happening on the streets. President Zurabishvili wants to hold new elections because she believes the current parliament is not legitimate.
New Elections, New Government
President Zurabishvili plans to stay in office until a new, legitimate parliament is elected. She said this is necessary because an illegitimate parliament cannot choose a new president. Without a new president, there will be no inauguration ceremony.
President Zurabishvili believes that holding new elections will allow Georgia to return to its path towards Europe and regain control over its own choices. She made it clear that the country’s independence and ability to make its own decisions are not up for negotiation.
