**Ukraine to Stop Russian Gas Transit After 2025**
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has announced that Ukraine will not extend its agreement with Russia for gas transit after it expires on January 1, 2025. This decision means that Ukraine will no longer be used as a route for Russian gas to reach Western Europe.
**No More Russian Gas**
Shmyhal emphasized that Ukraine is ready to consider gas transit from other sources, such as Azerbaijan or other countries. He also stated that any new agreements would need to be based on energy security principles for both the EU and individual European nations.
**European Countries Seek Alternatives**
The announcement comes as several European countries are searching for alternative gas supplies due to concerns about Russia’s reliability as a supplier. Slovakia, for example, has revealed that it is exploring new supply options, along with other European countries and companies.
**Cooperation on Electricity**
Shmyhal also discussed increased cooperation in the electricity sector between Ukraine and Slovakia, highlighting that 30% of Ukraine’s electricity imports last week came from its neighbor.
**EU Targets Russian Fossil Fuels**
The EU has set a target to stop using Russian fossil fuels by 2027. With Ukraine no longer planning to transit Russian gas after 2025, it seems that Europe is taking steps towards achieving this goal.
