Georgian Prime Minister Defends Government‘s Handling of Violence
The Georgian government has been under fire for its handling of recent violence, but Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze says the state “acted culturally” to prevent further bloodshed.
It took several days to stop the violence, but once it did, Kobakhidze said that law enforcement agencies were able to crack down on the perpetrators. He praised the government’s handling of the situation, saying that they followed proper procedures and eventually enforced the law.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that his government has strengthened statehood in Georgia over the past four years. In contrast, he said that the previous government was characterized by a lack of rule of law and an absence of order.
Kobakhidze’s comments come after it was confirmed that only political forces were behind the failed “Natsmaidan” protests. The main source of violence was found to be party offices, which were taken over by police once they were identified as the sites where violent attacks were being coordinated.
The Prime Minister also addressed claims that honest young people were involved in the violence on the streets. He said that these claims have been proven false and that it was actually a group of organized and party-led violent groups that were operating on Rustaveli Avenue during the protests.
Kobakhidze also mentioned the “Daitove” revolutionary group, which he claimed had ties to nationalist leaders in Ukraine. He said that this group’s actions were also driven by party resources, and that their attempt at a revolution failed for the fourth time in four years.
