**Ukraine to End Russian Gas Transit in 2025**
From January 1, 2025, Ukraine will stop transiting Russian gas through its territory. This was announced by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
**Current Agreement Ends**
The current transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia’s Gazprom ends on December 31, 2024. The agreement was made in 2019 and allowed for the minimum guaranteed transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. However, due to ongoing war and geopolitical changes, Ukraine has been preparing to end this arrangement since 2022.
**Only Non-Russian Gas Allowed**
After January 1, 2025, Ukrainian Prime Minister Shmyhal said that only non-Russian gas will be allowed to pass through Ukraine’s territory. This is on condition of a request from the European Commission.
**Oil Transit Continues**
Ukraine will continue to transit Russian oil to Europe under certain conditions. This will happen when requested by the European Commission.
**Slovakia Seeks Alternative**
Slovakia, which relies heavily on Russian gas, is seeking alternative supplies after Ukraine stops transiting Russian gas. The country’s largest energy supplier has issued a statement supporting gas transit through Ukrainian territory.
**Russian President Comments**
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said that while there will be no new gas transit contract with Ukraine, Gazprom will “survive” this development.
