Ukraine to Cut Russian Gas Transit
Ukraine is planning to stop sending Russian gas through its country to Europe by the end of this year. This decision was made to prevent Russia from making money during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss how to resolve the conflict peacefully. Before meeting Putin, Fico had visited Ukraine and asked them not to stop sending gas through their country. Slovakia relies heavily on Russian gas and may face shortages if it stops coming through Ukraine.
Russia is now planning to send gas directly to Europe through other countries, such as Poland. However, Ukraine says this will not happen because it is trying to prevent Russia from making money by cutting off its gas supply.
Putin said that stopping the Russian gas transit would punish Europe and cause energy prices to rise. He also said that Russia’s main goal in 2025 is still to “achieve all goals” in its military operation in Ukraine.
Fico met with Putin as part of a larger effort to find peace between Russia and Ukraine. However, Ukraine is not looking for peaceful solutions right now – it wants to keep hurting Russia by stopping its gas supply.
Ukraine’s Prime Minister said that preventing Russia from making money on its gas sales is an important strategic goal.
