**Russia and Iran Sign Strategic Partnership Agreement**
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian signed a strategic partnership agreement on January 17 in Moscow. This move comes as their cooperation has intensified since Russia’s war against Ukraine began in 2022.
**Cooperation Between Russia and Iran**
Iran has provided Russia with thousands of Shahed drones used to attack Ukrainian cities, as well as short-range ballistic missiles. The document signed by Putin and Pezeshkian establishes Moscow and Tehran as strategic partners, covering areas like energy, finance, transportation, agriculture, culture, science, technology, and counterterrorism.
**Security and Defense Cooperation**
The agreement also strengthens cooperation in security and defense between Russia and Iran. If one of the parties is subjected to aggression, the other will not provide any assistance to the aggressor. This move comes after a similar partnership agreement was signed with North Korea last June.
**Deeper Partnerships and Disaster Relief**
Moscow and Tehran have agreed to deepen partnerships between their special services and assist each other in natural and man-made disasters. The strategic agreement is concluded for 20 years, with automatic extension for subsequent 5-year periods.
