**Russia’s 2025 Budget: A Focus on Defense**
Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the country’s budget for 2025. This includes a plan for defense spending that is expected to have significant implications.
In 2024, Russia increased its defense budget by almost 28%. Now, in 2025, it plans to spend around 41% of its total budget on national defense and security. However, experts say this does not necessarily mean the country’s military capabilities will improve equally.
**Not All Spending Goes to Military Upgrades**
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has analyzed Russia’s budget plan. They found that a significant portion of the funding is likely to be used for benefits for soldiers and veterans, rather than improving military equipment or personnel training.
This could suggest that Russia faces challenges in supporting its troops. The ISW also warned that focusing on defense spending might strain the country’s economy and President Putin’s political stability.
**Ukraine Also Emphasizes Defense**
In a different development, Ukraine has adopted a draft budget for 2025 that prioritizes security and defense. The country plans to spend around $53 billion on defense, which is more than last year.
The Ukrainian Defense Minister said the government counts on financial aid from partner countries. However, due to delays, Ukraine might face challenges in the first quarter of next year.
