Russian President Vladimir Putin Attends Launch of New Nuclear-Powered Submarine
On March 26, Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the launch ceremony of a new nuclear-powered submarine named Perm. This is according to various Russian news outlets.
The submarine is special because it’s equipped with hypersonic Zircon missiles as standard equipment. The Zircon missile can fly at very high speeds and has a long range.
Putin spoke from the Arctic port of Murmansk via video link. He said that the submarine will strengthen Russia‘s maritime security and protect its national interests, especially in the Arctic region.
The Zircon missile is difficult to intercept because it flies so fast. Putin officially commissioned the submarine by saying “I hereby authorize” the vessel.
The Zircon hypersonic missile was first introduced into the Russian military in early 2023. It can fly at speeds of around 10,000 kilometers per hour and has a warhead weighing about 300-400 kilograms.
Russia has used these missiles to attack Ukrainian cities before, with the first recorded case being in February 2024.
