**Russia and China Partner on Artificial Intelligence**
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian government and state-owned bank Sberbank to develop partnerships with China in artificial intelligence technology. This instruction was published on the Kremlin’s website on January 1.
Moscow‘s alliance with Beijing has helped Russia gain access to technology and equipment that were previously blocked by Western sanctions due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Putin wants Russia to cooperate more with China in technological research and development, specifically in artificial intelligence. Sberbank is leading this effort.
International sanctions have limited Russia’s ability to develop its AI industry. Major microchip producers no longer ship to Russia, but the country still gets products through third-party sellers.
Graphics processing units (GPUs), essential for AI development, have been difficult for Russia to replace, according to Sberbank CEO German Gref. Putin has said he wants to create a new AI Alliance Network with members from BRICS countries and others.
China has deepened its ties with Russia since the start of the Kremlin’s full-scale war against Ukraine. However, Beijing denies accusations of supporting Russia’s military efforts.
Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged New Year greetings with Putin on December 31, saying that the political mutual trust and strategic coordination between the two sides have continued to improve under their leadership.
