Putin refuses to congratulate Trump, but Russian officials are cautiously cheering on his victory

On Nov. 6, several officials expressed their first reactions to Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. Presidential election, presenting it to be blow for Ukraine.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated that “Trump has a quality which is useful to us. As a businessman at heart, he hates to spend money on freeloaders and idiotic allies. He also dislikes charity projects and greedy international organisations.”
Trump won the presidential vote on November 5, beating his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. The election will have a major impact on Washington’s support of Kyiv as there is a fear that Trump may withdraw his support.
Medvedev, who is currently the deputy chairman of Russia’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), said that there remains a strong “bipartisan anti Russian consensus” in the U.S. Congress.
“The question is: how much will they make Trump give for the war,” wrote he.
In a parallel vote the Republican Party secured a majority of the Senate, while the results of the House elections are still being counted.
Maria Zakharova said on her Telegram Channel, the spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry that “those who love their country and not hate others win.”
Zakharova also added that she published a video in which Harris quoted a Bible passage. “Weeping might linger for a while, but joy will come in the morning,” Zakharova said. “Hallelujah,” I’ll add my own.
Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not congratulate Trump for his victory because the U.S. “is involved in a war with Russia.” He was referring to U.S. backing of Ukraine.
Many have congratulated Trump for his reelection. These include the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron and Hungarian Prime Minster Viktor Orban.
Putin claimed indifference towards the results of the vote, and even once said that he preferred Harris as president in an apparent wry comment. Meanwhile, U.S. Intelligence has accused Russia of interfering in the election to boost Trump.
Trump has repeatedly boasted of his supposedly close relationship to Putin, causing Ukraine to fear that he may seek a deal at the expense of painful concessions from their side.
According to a report in October, his plan to end the conflict within “24 hours” would benefit Russia because it would cede Ukrainian territory and create autonomous regions in eastern Ukraine.
In an interview with The Kyiv Independent, Evelyn Farkas said that Trump’s view was that he wanted to do all he could to help Putin, for whatever reason. He’s fascinated by Putin in particular.
